That's been our reason for being since 1992, when we made our first water tank in a kiwifruit packing shed in Whangarei. The world around us has changed a lot since then. Our purpose hasn't.
Together, making a difference today to sustain life tomorrow.
It Started During a Drought
In the early 1990s, Auckland was running dry. Reservoirs sat at just 30% capacity, and people across the region were desperate for water storage. Tim Strachan, a Northland farmer and engineer with liquid storage in his blood, saw a problem that needed solving and had the skills to solve it.
Starting from a converted kiwifruit packing shed, Tim began manufacturing rainwater tanks for rural and residential customers. The first tank out the door held 3,000 litres. Demand was immediate. As Tim's son Hamish recalls: "We made them in the morning and sold them in the afternoon."
Promax, a name rooted in the idea of maximum performance, was born.
Where It All Began
In 1992, Tim Strachan converted a kiwifruit packing shed in Whangarei into Promax's first factory. Auckland was in the grip of a prolonged drought, and rural and residential customers across the region were desperate for water storage. Tim's first product was a 3,000-litre above-ground water tank. It flew out the door. From those humble beginnings, a company built on the simple belief that everyone deserves access to reliable water storage was underway.
The Year Everything Changed
By 1999, Promax had outgrown its roots as a maker of small rainwater tanks. Listening closely to what customers needed, the company expanded its product range to serve four distinct markets: Rural, Build, Civil and Industrial. This included the launch of large-scale storage tanks ranging up to 30,000 litres in capacity. It was also during this period that Promax became the first and only company in New Zealand to manufacture corrugated polyethylene water tanks, a design innovation that remains a defining point of difference to this day.
Taking Promax South
To better serve the growing number of South Island customers, Promax opened a dedicated manufacturing facility in Rangiora, Canterbury in 2007. The move marked a significant step in the company's evolution from a Northland business into a truly national supplier. With feet planted firmly on both islands, Promax could now deliver its full product range faster and more reliably to customers from Northland to Southland.
A World-Class Home in the Far North
In 2010, Promax commissioned a state-of-the-art 1,500m² manufacturing facility and warehouse in Kerikeri, replacing the original Whangarei operation with something befitting the company's growth. The Kerikeri site became the beating heart of Promax's North Island operation, housing modern rotational moulding kilns capable of producing thousands of tanks every year. It remains one of the most advanced plastics manufacturing facilities in New Zealand.
Taking Control of the Supply Chain
In 2018, Promax installed in-house compounding lines at its Rangiora facility, allowing the team to grind and colour raw materials themselves rather than relying on external suppliers. The result was greater control over quality and consistency, a more efficient production process, increased output, and faster delivery times for customers nationwide. It was a quietly significant milestone, and exactly the kind of forward-thinking investment that keeps Promax ahead of the competition.
The Next Chapter
More than three decades since that first tank rolled out of a kiwifruit packing shed, Promax continues to grow. With two world-class manufacturing facilities, an expanding product range, and a team driven by the same restless desire to improve, the best is still to come. Water is New Zealand's most precious resource, and the need for smart, reliable liquid storage solutions has never been greater. We're ready for whatever comes next.
