What Is ProLiq and Why Store It on Farm

ProLiq is a dairy processing by-product. When lactose is removed from whey, the remaining liquid is rich in protein, energy and minerals. Thanks to its residual lactose content, ProLiq is an effective and affordable animal feed supplement for dairy cows and beef cattle.

Storing ProLiq on farm allows regular feeding without dependence on the delivery schedule. When herd energy levels drop (winter, early spring, drought), the farmer adds ProLiq to the diet and maintains productivity.

ProLiq in New Zealand Dairy Farming

New Zealand is one of the world's largest dairy producers. Dairy factories process large volumes of whey, and ProLiq is a valuable by-product of this process. Instead of disposal, ProLiq is used as a feed supplement, creating a closed loop in the dairy industry.

On pastoral NZ farms, grass quality fluctuates throughout the season. In winter and early spring, when grass growth is slow, ProLiq compensates for the energy deficit in the herd's diet. Bulk storage on farm allows purchasing larger volumes at a lower price and avoiding supply disruptions during peak seasons.

Tank Range: 4,000L to 30,000L

6 capacities: 4,000L, 5,000L, 10,000L, 15,000L, 25,000L, 30,000L.

All tanks are built from heavy-duty UV-treated polyethylene. The one-piece corrugated construction provides the additional rigidity needed for storing liquids with greater density and viscosity than water. The polyethylene meets NZ water standards.

Choosing the right capacity depends on herd size and delivery frequency:

  • 4,000L and 5,000L: for smaller farms or as additional storage alongside a main tank
  • 10,000L and 15,000L: for medium dairy and beef farms
  • 25,000L and 30,000L: for large farms and feed companies with bulk storage

Features

Side-mounted sight glass. A side-mounted level indicator for quick visual monitoring of the liquid volume without opening the lid. Allows the farmer to check the remaining level from a distance and order the next delivery on time.

One-piece corrugated construction. Single-piece construction with no joints or welded seams. Corrugated walls provide the additional rigidity needed for storing liquids heavier than water. The construction is rated for full load under daily operation.

Heavy-duty UV polyethylene. Industrial-grade polyethylene, UV-treated for outdoor use. Does not rust, does not need painting or internal lining. Chemically resistant to contact with ProLiq.

ProLiq Storage for Dairy and Food Industries

Promax ProLiq tanks are a liquid storage solution for dairy processing products in the dairy and food industries. Techo Process Engineering Solutions in South Canterbury ordered a 30,000L Industrial Tank with custom welded connections (welded spigots, backing rings and expansion joints) for storing ProLiq from a new dairy factory. Increased production at the factory required additional by-product storage, and Promax delivered the tank on time and within budget.

Site Preparation and Handling

ProLiq is heavier than water: the specific gravity depends on concentration but typically exceeds 1.0. For large tanks (25,000L and 30,000L), a level compacted pad capable of supporting the full load is essential. A concrete slab or compacted gravel are standard bases.

The site should be set up with access for the tanker truck that will deliver ProLiq. The distance from the tank to the dispenser or feeding system determines the pipe run length and pump requirements.
