Why Choose Promax Molasses Tanks

Molasses is significantly heavier than water: specific gravity ~1.4, meaning 30,000L of molasses weighs approximately 42 tonnes. A standard water tank is not designed for this load. Promax molasses storage tanks are manufactured with thickened walls and reinforced construction for safe storage of heavy viscous liquids.

The corrugated one-piece polyethylene construction provides strength without welds or joints. Polyethylene does not react with molasses, does not rust, and is easy to clean. A side-mounted sight glass allows you to monitor volume without opening the lid.

Molasses in New Zealand Farming

Molasses is an effective feed supplement for dairy and beef farming. It provides quick energy for animals, improves feed absorption, and increases milk production. Combined with grass and silage, molasses balances the diet, especially during winter and dry periods when pasture grass contains fewer nutrients.

New Zealand dairy farms use molasses as part of the daily herd ration. Bulk on-farm storage allows purchasing larger volumes at a lower price and avoids supply disruptions during peak seasons.

Molasses tank range

Five capacities from 4,000L to 30,000L with maximum load weights:

  • 4,000L: load weight 5 tonnes
  • 5,000L: load weight 6 tonnes
  • 15,000L: load weight 22 tonnes
  • 25,000L: load weight 32 tonnes
  • 30,000L: load weight 42 tonnes

All tanks: corrugated construction, UV treated polyethylene, side-mounted sight glass, NZ Water Standards Compliant. The 15,000L, 25,000L and 30,000L tanks are available with North Island and South Island variants.

Molasses Fitting Kit

A kit for connecting the tank to your feed delivery system. Includes: 1x brass ball valve 50 mm, 1x brass ball valve 80 mm, 1x male cam lock 80 mm with dustcap. Everything needed to connect the tank to a pump and pipeline.

Insulated and heated molasses storage

For storing molasses at elevated temperatures (~40 degrees C), Promax manufactures insulated tanks. Heating reduces the viscosity of molasses, making it easier to pump and mix with feed products. Insulation provides significant energy savings on temperature maintenance.

Agrifeeds (Tauranga) installed 3 x 30,000L insulated tanks for storing 90,000 litres of molasses at approximately 40 degrees C. The tanks feature removable roofs for installation and servicing of heating coils.

Installation recommendations

The weight of a full tank requires a solid foundation. For a 30,000L tank (42 tonnes), a concrete pad or compacted gravel platform rated for this mass is required. The site should be prepared with access for the tanker truck delivering molasses.

The tank drain outlet is located at the bottom. Pipeline planning from the tank to the dispenser or pump depends on distance and elevation difference. For complex feed delivery systems, contact Promax for technical advice.
