Why You Need a Fire Water Storage Tank

On rural properties without reticulated water supply, the fire service cannot connect to a hydrant. You need your own water source. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) requires a minimum of 45,000L of fire water storage on rural properties. Your local council may set different requirements.

For commercial buildings (fire protection water storage tanks), requirements depend on the building type, floor area, and Importance Level. Hospitals and emergency centres require IL4 certification.

A polyethylene fire water tank does not rust, does not require painting, and the one-piece construction reduces maintenance. Polyethylene is certified to AS/NZ 4766.

When you need a fire tank:

  • Rural property without reticulated water supply (rural fire tank)
  • New subdivision where council requires a fire water reserve
  • Commercial or industrial building with fire safety requirements
  • Fire sprinkler storage for a building
  • Protection of marae and heritage buildings

Fire Hydrant Tanks: ENDURO and XPRESS

Promax manufactures dedicated fire hydrant tanks in the ENDURO and XPRESS series. Standard water tanks from 10,000L to 30,000L are also suitable for fire water storage.

ENDURO Fire Hydrant Tank. Corrugated walls for increased rigidity. 4 inlet panels, 2 x 50mm threaded outlets on the base. Can be buried up to 1 metre to reduce visible height (useful where building restrictions apply). Available on the North Island (Kerikeri factory).

XPRESS Fire Hydrant Tank. Smooth walls, one-piece construction. 4 inlet/outlet panels, 50mm threaded outlet on the base. Reinforced lid construction. AON certified under listing certificate M151. Available on the South Island (Rangiora factory).

To meet the FENZ requirement of 45,000L, you typically need two tanks (for example, 2 x 25,000L or 30,000L + 15,000L). Tanks are connected through a Dual Tank Fire Service Outlet Kit.

Fire Service Outlet Kits

Fire Service Outlet Kits approved to SNZ PAS 4509:2003. They provide the connection between the tank and the fire hose for high-pressure flow. Each kit includes: 100mm tank fitting, brass gate valve, galvanised bracket 150 mm to 250 mm height, and an approved FENZ fire coupling.

Four configurations:

  • Single Tank Kit: for one above-ground tank.
  • Dual Tank Kit: for connecting and drawing simultaneously from two above-ground tanks. For systems where two tanks are needed to reach 45,000L.
  • Buried Single Tank Kit: for one tank buried up to 1 metre (ENDURO). The hose reaches down to the water level in the buried tank.
  • Buried Dual Tank Kit: for two buried tanks. Equalises water levels between tanks.

The FENZ fire appliance must be able to drive within 6 metres of the fire coupling. Clear access must be maintained without obstructions (fences, trees, buildings).

AON Approved Fire Sprinkler Storage Tank System

A fire sprinkler tank approved by AON under listing certificate M151. High-grade polyethylene certified to AS/NZ 4766. One-piece construction, smooth walls, reinforced lid with 4 inlet/outlet panels, 50mm threaded outlet. For commercial and residential sprinkler storage.

Custom Sprinkler Storage

Custom sprinkler tanks for sites with specific requirements. PS1 documentation for engineered design up to Importance Level 4 (IL4). Suitable for critical infrastructure: hospitals, emergency centres. Design life: 25 years. Contact Promax.

Anti-Vortex Suction Outlet

Prevents vortex air entrainment during draw-off, which can cause cavitation and uneven flow. Compliant with NZS 4541:2020 (Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems). Factory fit only. Custom configurations available.

Taranaki Base Hospital installed 6 x 30,000L tanks for backup water supply and fire storage at Importance Level 4.

The "Guarding Our Treasures" programme provided fire sprinkler protection systems for marae throughout New Zealand, protecting wharenui with historic carvings.
