Dust is part of working life on New Zealand sites. Haul roads, forestry roads, quarry floors and earthworks all start throwing it up as soon as the ground dries out, and that slows the job down, makes it less safe and causes problems with the neighbours.
Keeping it under control takes more than a spare tank and a garden hose. You need enough water on board, a pump that can deliver it, and sprays that put it where it's needed. That's what the Promax Dust Suppression range is built to do.
Why Dust Suppression Matters on NZ Sites
Worker health. Fine dust, and respirable crystalline silica in particular, is a recognised health risk in construction, quarrying and roading. WorkSafe New Zealand notes that water spray and misting systems can be used to help keep silica dust out of the air. Read the WorkSafe guidance on silica dust in the workplace for more.
Visibility and safety. Dust clouds on haul roads and around machinery cut visibility for operators, drivers and anyone on foot.
Neighbours and surroundings. Dust doesn't stay inside the boundary. It settles on neighbouring properties, vehicles and vegetation, and complaints follow.
Productivity. A site that can keep dust down can keep working through dry spells instead of stopping.
The Promax Dust Suppression Range
Promax dust suppression units are designed, manufactured and supported in New Zealand. The range runs from a 2,000L trailer unit through to 15,000L, in three formats: slip-on units, a trailer unit and chassis-mounted builds.
Slip-On Dust Suppression Units: 3,000L to 15,000L
Slip-on units sit on a heavy-duty galvanised steel skid mount frame and load onto a truck deck. They're available in nine sizes: 3,000L, 3,400L, 5,000L, 6,000L, 7,000L, 8,000L, 10,000L, 13,000L and 15,000L.
Every slip-on unit comes with:
- A Honda GX160 semi-trash water pump, rated at 1,000 litres per minute with a 28m maximum head
- Rear batter spray nozzles set by flow-adjustable brass ball valves, fully adjustable with 360-degree rotation
- A rear spray bar operated from an in-cab controller
- A suction system with ball valve and camlock inlet, plus a 10-metre flexible suction hose with brass foot valve and strainer, for filling from dams, rivers and creeks
- A camlock pump inlet and outlet for bulk water transfer and hydrant filling
- The Promax Ball Baffle System to control water movement in transit
- Galvanised steel pipework, a water level sight glass, a 30m hose reel, a safety beacon and four chain tie-down and lifting points
The 3,000L to 6,000L units use a 2" suction system and camlock with two rear batter sprays. The 7,000L to 15,000L units step up to a 3" suction system and camlock with three rear batter sprays.
Optional extras include a diesel or hydraulic powered pump, a front spray bar, a dribble bar and self-loading legs. The legs are available for the 8,000L, 10,000L, 13,000L and 15,000L units and let the operator load and unload an empty unit without lifting equipment.
2,000L Dust Suppression Trailer Unit
The Promax Dust Suppression Trailer Unit puts 2,000 litres on a towable trailer with hydraulic brakes, so no truck needs to be set aside for it.
It comes with:
- A 2" Honda GX120 electric start pump, rated at 600 litres per minute with a 32m maximum head
- An in-cab radio spray actuator
- The Ball Baffle System and a galvanised sub-frame
- A single aluminium batter spray nozzle
- 2" bulk fill and discharge camlock ports
A washdown hose and reel and a diesel powered pump are available as options.
Chassis-Mounted Dust Suppression Units: 5,000L to 15,000L
For trucks dedicated to water work, Promax builds chassis-mounted dust suppression units fitted directly to the truck chassis. Each one is built to your specification for civil, forestry or roading work.
Features include:
- Capacities from 5,000L to 15,000L
- Petrol, diesel or hydraulic driven pumps
- Front and rear spray bars
- A high flow washdown hose and reel
- Galvanised pipework
- In-cab controls and functions
Add a Sidewinder Water Cannon
The EXM2 SideWinder Cannon Kit adds flexibility and safety for damping down stockpiles, fire-fighting and reducing machinery movement on site. The electric nozzle adjusts from fog to straight stream, rotates 350 degrees horizontally and 135 degrees vertically, and is operated by a radio remote handset.
Choosing the Right Setup
The right unit comes down to how much ground you need to cover, the vehicle you're running and how you want to use it.
- Want the truck back for other work? A slip-on unit comes off the deck when the job is done. From 8,000L up, self-loading legs mean you can do it without a crane or loader.
- Running a dedicated water truck? A chassis-mounted unit is built permanently onto the truck, to your specification.
- Don't want to tie up a truck at all? The 2,000L trailer unit tows behind and carries its own pump and spray.
- Covering a lot of ground between refills? The larger slip-on units carry more water and step up to 3" plumbing and three rear sprays.
Check your truck's payload against the full unit, not just the tank size. Water weighs about a kilogram per litre, and the units themselves range from around 500kg empty for the 5,000L to around 1,260kg for the 15,000L. Dimensions and weights are listed on each product page. For a detailed checklist, read Dust Suppression Units in NZ: What to Look For Before You Buy.
